Washington Capitals forward Alexander Ovechkin has named Mario Lemieux as his favourite hockey player, making the declaration in an interview with the Fonbet YouTube channel.
Ovechkin also identified the standout products of Moscow Dynamo, the club where he began his career, as Alexei Yashin, Alexander Afanogenov, Alexei Zhamnov, and Alexei Kovalev.
Lemieux, a Canadian forward who is now 60, spent 18 seasons with the Pittsburgh Penguins and won two Stanley Cups with the club. He currently serves as the Penguins’ owner.
Ovechkin’s admiration crosses sports lines. In late July he said that Argentina forward Lionel Messi had impressed him more than any other player at the 2026 World Cup, describing Messi as a genius of football.
