Portuguese cinema theaters recorded 8.9 million euros in box office revenue in July 2026, a 21.2 percent increase from July 2025, according to ICA data. The figure represents a gain of 1.5 million euros compared to the same period in 2025.
The Instituto do Cinema e do Audiovisual reported that Portuguese theaters also saw audience numbers grow by 10.2 percent. A total of 1,235,350 moviegoers visited theaters during the month.
July box office hits and top films
Four major film releases drove the July revenue total, with each title generating more than one million euros at the box office. The lineup of top earners included The Odyssey, Minions and Monsters, Moana, and Spider-Man: A New Day.
Christopher Nolan's film The Odyssey became the most watched movie of July despite opening on July 16. The release earned 2.8 million euros in box office revenue and drew 332,883 viewers.
Destin Daniel Cretton's Spider-Man: A New Day generated nearly one million euros in box office sales during its first two recorded days of screening. The film registered 139,343 spectators over that two-day period.
Year to date cinema revenue and attendance
Between January and July 2026, a total of 6,696,013 spectators attended Portuguese cinema halls. The ICA reported that cumulative attendance rose by a slight 0.3 percent compared to the first seven months of 2025.
Box office earnings for the first seven months of 2026 reached 46.1 million euros. That total represents an 8.5 percent increase over the revenues recorded during the same period in 2025.
The ICA collected statistical data from 511 cinema halls across Portugal through July, encompassing both commercial theater chains and municipal auditoriums. In July 2025, the data covered 540 cinema halls nationwide.
Distributor rankings and Portuguese film share
The success of The Odyssey propelled distributor Cinemundo to the top of the market standings in July. Cinemundo recorded 2,466,423 total viewers and 17.4 million euros in box office revenue, overtaking regular market leader NOS Lusomundo Audiovisuais.
Distributors premiered 243 films in Portuguese theaters since the start of 2026. Domestic productions and co-productions accounted for 31 of those releases, representing a 12.8 percent share of all premiering titles.
Those 31 Portuguese films drew 85,193 spectators through July, capturing 1.3 percent of total attendance. The national productions accumulated 402,410 euros in box office earnings, which accounted for 0.9 percent of overall box office revenue.
