Pregnant women who engage in regular strength training can reduce their risk of developing gestational diabetes and improve their overall well-being, according to a randomized clinical trial published in the journal Acta Obstetricia et Gynecologica Scandinavica.
The study found that no cases of gestational diabetes occurred among women who completed a regular resistance exercise program throughout their pregnancy. In contrast, 7.3 percent of women in a control group receiving standard prenatal care developed the condition.

Researchers also recorded no instances of babies born with excessively high birth weight in the exercise group. By comparison, 6.3 percent of mothers in the control group gave birth to infants with abnormally high birth weight. Excessively high birth weight, known medically as fetal macrosomia, occurs when a newborn weighs significantly more than average, which can increase the risk of birth injuries and delivery complications.
Participants following the strength training routine reported a higher quality of life and experienced pregnancy symptoms less frequently than those who did not exercise.
Study design and exercise regimen
The trial evaluated 209 pregnant women divided into two groups. Participants in the intervention group performed a structured strength training program starting between the 12th and 14th weeks of pregnancy and continuing until the 36th week or delivery.
Women in the control group received standard pregnancy management recommendations without an assigned exercise regimen.
Gestational diabetes is a condition characterized by high blood sugar levels that develop during pregnancy in women who did not previously have diabetes.
