Raków Częstochowa suffered their fifth consecutive Ekstraklasa defeat as Górnik Zabrze secured a 2-1 victory in Częstochowa, leaving the home side bottom of the Polish top flight without a single point.
Raków Częstochowa, a Polish professional football club based in Częstochowa, are enduring a disastrous start to the new campaign. The team failed to qualify for European cup competitions this season, and their domestic struggles led to the dismissal of head coach Dawid Kroczek following four straight losses to open the league schedule. Former assistant coach Dawid Szulczek was subsequently appointed as interim manager.
Górnik Zabrze took an early lead in the fifth round fixture when forward Janis Antiste opened the scoring in the sixth minute. The visiting team doubled their advantage in the 34th minute after Rafał Janicki found the net, giving Górnik a commanding two-goal lead heading into the second half.
Raków responded after the interval with a goal scored by Mahir Emreli, but the second-half strike proved insufficient to alter the final result. Górnik Zabrze held on to secure the 2-1 win, condemning Raków, traditionally nicknamed Medaliki, to their fifth straight league loss of the season.
Interim manager admits selection error
Speaking at his post-match press conference following his debut in charge, interim manager Dawid Szulczek acknowledged that his tactical choices and squad lineup had contributed to the defeat. Szulczek made a number of surprising personnel decisions for the match, which he later conceded were mistaken.
Szulczek said he considered it a mistake to field so many players who had only recently arrived at the club. He stated that the team would look better in future matches once the players had more time to become familiar with one another on and off the pitch.
The manager added that he wanted his side to play with the same level of performance and energy that they demonstrated throughout the second half against Górnik. He emphasized that Raków must carry that same intensity into their next fixture in Poznań.
Upcoming test against league leaders
Raków face another difficult fixture in the next round of Ekstraklasa matches when they travel to face reigning Polish champions Lech Poznań. Known as Kolejorz, the Poznań club currently lead the league standings with 13 points after earning a 2-1 victory over Jagiellonia.
Looking ahead to the encounter with the league leaders, Szulczek said he could not predict what the final scoreline in Poznań would be. However, the interim coach insisted that his staff and players would do everything possible to ensure the team entered the match determined to take the initiative from the start.
