Tech publication SlashGear has explained why smartphone manufacturers phased out removable batteries, citing device safety and internal design optimization as the primary causes.

During the late 2000s, removable power packs were standard equipment across smartphones, laptops, and other portable electronics. Today, mobile devices featuring batteries that users can quickly unclip and replace have virtually disappeared from the consumer market.
In the early era of mobile devices, battery cells had significantly lower energy capacities and charged far more slowly than modern hardware. Carrying a fully charged spare battery allowed users to instantly swap out a depleted pack and keep their devices running without waiting near a wall socket.
Shift to sealed device designs
As hardware evolved, consumer tech companies shifted their priority toward building stronger protective enclosures for smartphones, laptops, and personal gadgets. SlashGear reported that manufacturers gradually abandoned removable battery mechanisms to improve overall structural integrity.
A dedicated battery compartment requires extra casing materials and release latches, which occupy valuable internal space inside a phone or laptop. In addition, devices built with removable rear panels cannot offer sufficient protection against dust and moisture, making them far more vulnerable to environmental damage.
Modern flagship smartphones rely on tightly sealed glass and metal sandwich construction held together by industrial adhesives. Eliminating internal partition walls and battery latches allows engineers to pack larger main batteries, multi-lens camera modules, and wireless charging coils into increasingly slim profiles.
Remaining devices with replaceable packs
Although removable batteries have vanished from flagship mobile phones, the technology has not completely disappeared. Replaceable power sources remain common in push-button feature phones, wireless video game controllers, certain headphones, and select specialized devices.
Basic push-button feature phones consume very little power, allowing removable batteries to last for days while keeping manufacturing costs low. Peripheral hardware like wireless gamepads and headsets also continue to use user-replaceable AA batteries or snap-in packs for quick battery swaps during long sessions.
Methods to extend smartphone battery life
With modern smartphone batteries permanently sealed inside device bodies, maintaining battery health has become a key concern for consumers. Tech publication MakeUseOf previously reported that turning off specific background features on Android smartphones can help extend overall device lifespan.
Journalists at the outlet recommended disabling Google software options such as Now Playing and Hey Google. Turning off these continuous background listening features reduces energy consumption on Android devices, helping users maximize daily battery performance without physical battery replacements.
