Russian blogger Elizaveta Savchikhina, who lives in China, has expressed her shock after high indoor humidity caused severe mold growth throughout her home.
Writing on her official Telegram channel, Savchikhina detailed the domestic problem that unpleasantly surprised her, describing how damp conditions damaged her household items after she returned to her residence.
Savchikhina stated that she was completely astonished to reflect on what she had been breathing over the course of an entire year. Upon arriving back at her home, she discovered several highly unpleasant surprises awaiting her, including widespread fungal growth on her personal effects.
Addressing her online audience, she asked whether they were aware that pillowcases could become moldy, confirming that her own pillowcases had indeed succumbed to mold. She explained that mattresses left in such humid conditions are also vulnerable to severe mold infestation.
Savchikhina noted that she had tried to clean the affected mattress using household vinegar, but her efforts were unsuccessful. She added that elevated moisture levels both inside the house and outdoors caused mold to appear in the corners of her hallway as well.
Humidity and mold risks in residential housing
Managing indoor humidity is a common concern for residents in many regions of China, particularly in areas subject to rainy seasons and coastal air masses. High relative humidity can cause ambient moisture to settle on soft furnishings, mattresses, and non-porous structural surfaces.
Mold thrives in poorly ventilated or humid environments, deteriorating organic fibers such as cotton and linen. While vinegar is often recommended as a surface cleaning agent due to its acetic acid content, severe moisture penetration inside dense materials like mattress foam can make mold impossible to eliminate completely without replacing the item.
Telegram, the platform where Savchikhina shared her experience, is a popular cloud-based messaging service widely used by Russian content creators and expatriates. Bloggers frequently use public channels on the app to document daily challenges, cultural differences, and domestic life while living in foreign countries.
Prior disputes over international visa processing
The household mold issue is not the first problem Savchikhina has publicly recounted regarding her life abroad. She previously reported encountering dismissive behavior when applying for a visa, stating at the time that she believed a consulate staff member had treated her unprofessionally due to her nationality.
