Half of all Russian consumers pay attention to whether vegetable packaging is eco-friendly when buying produce, according to survey results from R-GRUNT.

The survey, conducted by the specialized business unit of ROCKWOOL and shared with news outlet Lenta.ru, detailed how packaging materials influence supermarket purchasing decisions across the country. Researchers found that 35 percent of respondents said environmental packaging could influence their selection of a specific product, while 15 percent identified it as one of their most important shopping criteria.
By contrast, 27 percent of citizens admitted they do not pay much attention to packaging sustainability, and 16 percent reported that the factor holds no meaning for them at all.
Health and safety motivations
For shoppers in Russia, eco-friendly packaging is defined by the use of biodegradable materials, paper containers, or raw materials that are easy to recycle. However, the study noted that environmental protection is not the sole or primary reason consumers seek out green packaging options.
Health considerations play a significant role in consumer behavior. A substantial 68 percent of Russians view eco-friendly packaging as safer for human health, while 13 percent believe that products packaged in sustainable materials are of higher quality overall.
Biodegradable packaging and paper containers have become increasingly common in global produce aisles as retailers respond to environmental standards. Industry analysts note that consumer preferences for natural packaging often reflect broader concerns over synthetic chemical contact with fresh food items, leading shoppers to perceive paper and compostable wraps as cleaner alternatives.
Product quality and consumer priorities
Despite the growing awareness of packaging sustainability, eco-friendliness is not the top priority for all shoppers. The poll showed that for 43 percent of respondents, packaging sustainability is not the most decisive factor when selecting fresh produce.
A clear majority of 69 percent of Russian consumers declared that the quality and safety of the food product itself remains their primary consideration when making purchases.
