Forecasters at the Hydrometeorological Centre of Russia have issued overnight frost warnings for multiple Russian regions as temperatures drop below freezing.
According to a report published by Russian state news agency RIA Novosti, meteorological experts warned that night-time temperatures in several administrative territories will fall below zero degrees Celsius in late September and early October.
Sub-zero temperatures across Volga and Urals
From September 29 to September 30, overnight frosts reaching minus three degrees Celsius will affect the Republic of Bashkortostan, Perm Krai, the northern area of the Volga Federal District, and Samara, Orenburg, Sverdlovsk and Kurgan Oblasts.
During the same two-day period, night-time temperatures in the neighboring Republic of Tatarstan are expected to drop to minus two degrees Celsius.
In Chelyabinsk Oblast, located in the southern Ural region, meteorologists reported that the cold conditions will last longer, with overnight frosts reaching minus five degrees Celsius from September 29 through October 2.
Capital city Moscow is also preparing for colder weather during the week. According to earlier reports, a cold snap is set to arrive in the city, with temperatures beginning to decline toward the end of the working week.
National weather agency and affected geography
The Hydrometeorological Centre of Russia operates as the principal weather forecasting body under the Federal Service for Hydrometeorology and Environmental Monitoring. Headquartered in Moscow, the agency provides official meteorological predictions, hydrological forecasts and environmental monitoring across the nation's vast territory.
The regions facing sub-zero temperatures span key economic and geographical zones across western and central Russia. The Volga Federal District, situated in the eastern part of European Russia along the Volga River, includes major industrial and agricultural regions such as Tatarstan and Bashkortostan.
Further east, Sverdlovsk, Kurgan and Chelyabinsk Oblasts border the Ural Mountains, the geographical range that traditionally divides Europe from Asia. These regions experience continental weather patterns where continental Arctic air frequently drives early autumn temperature drops.
Reporting on the forecasts was carried out by RIA Novosti, one of Russia's largest state-owned media outlets, which distributes news from federal agencies and regional centers across the country.
