The Russian stock market fell sharply on August 18 after news reports revealed that no dates have been set for White House representatives Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner to visit Moscow. Shares on the Moscow Exchange tumbled 1.5 percent within a 30-minute span following reports around 3:30 p.m. local time that timing for the diplomatic visit remains uncertain.
The sudden downturn interrupted a strong recovery on the Russian exchange, which had been rising actively earlier in the day after enduring a cumulative 10 percent drop over the previous four trading sessions. According to market trading data, the Moscow Exchange index reached 2,163.3 points by 3:20 p.m. before falling to 2,133.8 points just 30 minutes later as investor disappointment hit market sentiment.

By the time of reporting, the benchmark indicator had staged a modest recovery, trading up 2.22 percent on the day at 2,139.61 points. The Moscow Exchange, known as MOEX, is Russia's primary financial trading platform, operating markets in equities, bonds, derivatives, and foreign currencies, with its main ruble-denominated index serving as a key measure of domestic market confidence.
Kremlin response to diplomatic visit speculation
Addressing the market reaction and travel reports, Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov told VGTRK television journalist Pavel Zarubin that Moscow currently has nothing to report regarding a visit by the Washington representatives. Ushakov noted that the US officials had previously participated in preliminary discussions concerning a potential settlement to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
Speaking to state news agency TASS, Ushakov remarked that the intense public interest made the trip sound like relatives arriving in Moscow from Kaluga, a regional capital located roughly 150 kilometers southwest of the Russian capital. He emphasized that a high-level international meeting requires extensive advance preparation and coordination between both governments, adding that an official announcement will be made only when plans take concrete shape.
Ushakov serves as the chief foreign policy advisor to Russian President Vladimir Putin, overseeing international affairs and high-level bilateral negotiations. VGTRK is Russia's state-owned national broadcasting company, while TASS is the country's primary state news service.
Status of prospective peace talks
The uncertainty over the arrival of Witkoff and Kushner follows comments made last week by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov regarding potential renewed negotiations with the United States over Ukraine. Lavrov stated that Russia is not refusing further talks with American representatives, but stressed that the critical factor remains what proposals the incoming delegation brings with them.
Lavrov has served as Russia's Foreign Minister since 2004, acting as Moscow's top diplomatic officer across multiple international negotiations. Steve Witkoff is an American real estate executive serving as a diplomatic envoy, while Jared Kushner is a businessman and former senior advisor to the White House who has previously led foreign policy initiatives.
