Russian troops operating in Ukraine have wrapped one of their Lancet kamikaze drones in foil, an unusual modification captured on camera by a Ukrainian interceptor.

The image, which was highlighted by the Russian military blogger Telegram channel Osvedomitel, shows a Lancet munition in mid-air with the majority of its main fuselage covered in a metallic foil material.

The specific model pictured in the photograph is the Izdeliye 52, which is the standard version of the Lancet strike drone recognizable by its two sets of distinctive X-shaped wings.

The precise purpose behind the makeshift foil wrapping remains unknown. Observers have speculated that Russian drone operators may be experimenting with field modifications and new coatings in an attempt to reduce the aircraft's visibility to certain Ukrainian sensors or electronic warfare systems.

The Lancet has become a central weapon for Russian forces during the conflict. It is a loitering munition developed by ZALA Aero Group, a subsidiary of the Russian arms manufacturer Kalashnikov Concern. The aircraft are designed to cruise over a battlefield to locate high value targets before diving and detonating an internal explosive warhead directly on impact.

These strike drones operate as part of a wider reconnaissance and strike complex. This network relies on the Z-16 surveillance drone, which is typically deployed first to scan the battlefield, find targets, and relay their exact coordinates back to the Lancet operators for the strike.

Both Russia and Ukraine have relied heavily on unmanned aerial vehicles throughout the conflict for both intelligence gathering and precision attacks. This heavy reliance has led to a constant cycle of rapid tactical adaptations, field experiments, and physical modifications to counter enemy air defences.

Recent system upgrades

The foil wrapping modification follows recent reports of technical upgrades being applied to the Lancet system. In August, the Russian military channel Voennaya Khronika reported that the drones had been updated with software that allows them to automatically collect target information prior to launching an attack.

Russian forces have also claimed recent long range successes with the weapons system. It was previously reported that a Russian Lancet strike drone successfully hit an IRIS-T SLM air defence system supplied to Kyiv at a distance of approximately 200 kilometers.

The IRIS-T SLM is an advanced surface-to-air missile system manufactured in Germany. Several of these systems have been provided to the Ukrainian military by Western allies to help defend against Russian missile and drone attacks.
