An officer in the Russian Aerospace Forces is in serious condition after an attempted assassination in the village of Probuzhdenie in Saratov Oblast.
A gunman wearing a helmet arrived on a motorcycle at a private house in the settlement on the morning of Thursday, September 3. The assailant opened fire on the serviceman, hitting him once in the torso and once in the face.
Medical personnel are preparing the injured officer for transport to Moscow aboard a special medical aircraft as he remains in heavy condition following the shooting.

Investigators from the Saratov Oblast department of the Investigative Committee of Russia inspected the scene of the attack. Detectives collected bullets and shell casings from the ground outside the residence as part of their initial forensic work.
Criminal investigation launched
The regional management of the Investigative Committee told news outlet Lenta.ru that a formal criminal case has been opened into the shooting. The investigation was initiated under Part 3 of Article 30 and Part 1 of Article 105 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation, which cover attempted murder.
Law enforcement authorities also filed charges under Part 1 of Article 222 of the criminal code for illegal weapons trafficking. Officials stated that decisions are currently being made regarding the appointment of forensic examinations to analyze the recovered evidence.
