Katerina Siniakova of the Czech Republic and Taylor Townsend of the United States won the women's doubles title at the US Open, beating American wildcard pair Robin Montgomery and Ashlyn Krueger 5-7, 6-0, 6-2 in the final.
The US Open, the final Grand Slam tournament of the season, is played on hard courts at Flushing Meadows in New York.
Montgomery and Krueger, who received a wildcard entry into the tournament, raced to a 4-1 lead with a break of serve. Top-seeded Siniakova and Townsend fought back to level at 4-4 and created two break-point chances of their own, but Montgomery and Krueger held serve each time. The Americans went on to win the first set 7-5, with Siniakova hitting a double fault on set point.
Siniakova and Townsend left no doubt in the second set, breaking their opponents' serve immediately and winning it 6-0 in just over 20 minutes. Townsend's serve caused persistent trouble for the Americans, who won only five of eighteen points on their own serve during the set.
Third-set comeback
Montgomery and Krueger held off a break point at the start of the third set, but Siniakova and Townsend broke through soon after. Strong serving from both players took the top seeds to 4-2, with both of those games won without dropping a point.
The pair continued to dictate play, creating break-point chances in every one of their opponents' service games. They converted one to move ahead 5-2, putting the match firmly in their control. Siniakova then closed it out on serve, fighting off several break points along the way.
A dominant season
The win capped a strong season for Siniakova and Townsend, who also won titles in Indian Wells, Miami and Madrid, as well as the French Open, this year. The pair had been runners-up at last year's US Open, losing the final to the Canadian-New Zealand duo of Gabriela Dabrowski and Erin Routliffe. Combining their career results, the win marked the pairing's 14th Grand Slam doubles title between them.
Siniakova, a former world number one in doubles, and Townsend, an accomplished doubles specialist, have built one of the most successful partnerships in the women's game over the past two seasons.
On their way to the final, Montgomery and Krueger eliminated the tournament's second seeds, Dabrowski and Luisa Stefani.
Prize money and what's next
The champions shared a prize of $1 million, while the runners-up received half that amount. The women's singles title remains open, with the final scheduled for Saturday between new world number one Jelena Rybakina, the Kazakhstani player who won Wimbledon in 2022, and Aryna Sabalenka, the two-time Australian Open champion she replaced at the top of the rankings.
