Sophia Antipolis near Antibes has installed a phosphorescent coating on a bicycle path to light up routes for night commuters.

The urban community of Sophia Antipolis spent 20,000 euros to equip 2.5 kilometers of cycle lane with the glowing surface. Installing conventional electric streetlights along the same stretch would have cost 200,000 euros, representing a tenfold expenditure increase.

Sophia Antipolis is a major technology park situated in the Alpes-Maritimes department of southeastern France, located northwest of Antibes on the French Riviera. The surrounding woodland environment makes traditional lighting challenging due to energy consumption and the disturbance caused to local nocturnal fauna.

Local residents and commuters interviewed in a TF1 television news report welcomed the new infrastructure. One female walker noted that young workers returning home late on e-scooters previously had to navigate complete darkness, describing the evening illumination as a major safety improvement. A father also stated that the previous lack of lighting had created ongoing safety concerns for families.

Cyclists using the path highlighted that the glowing surface allows them to see the route clearly when returning late from work. Another rider pointed out that the illuminated lane makes it easier to spot unlit pedestrians by contrast.

Photoluminescent coating technology

Louis Despres, director of roads and major projects at the Sophia Antipolis urban community, explained that the installation relies on a photoluminescent strip. The coating stores ambient light during the day and emits it after sunset for up to ten hours.

Despres stated that the material resembles standard road paint but contains specialized pigments that capture both direct sunlight and daylight. As a result, the photoluminescent system remains fully functional even during overcast weather conditions.

Photoluminescent coatings absorb radiation from natural light sources and store energy within their crystal structures. Unlike electrical lighting, photoluminescence requires no wiring, ongoing electricity costs, or bulb maintenance, making it an increasingly attractive option for municipal authorities seeking low-carbon urban infrastructure.

Retroreflective road paint in Val-de-Reuil

Economic considerations have also prompted municipal leaders in northern France to adopt alternative road lighting solutions. In Val-de-Reuil, a town in the Eure department of Normandy, the local council opted for a system using retroreflective paint to light an elevated overpass.

Daniel Bemer, chief executive officer of Crysal, the company that designed the marking system, explained that the solution creates a luminous marking that highlights the curve of the overpass. Bemer noted that the markings clarify how fast drivers should travel and guide how motorists turn their steering wheels.

Drivers interviewed in the TF1 report gave positive feedback on the overpass markings. One male motorist stated that the layout offered clear visibility while conserving energy, while a female driver remarked that she approved of any initiative that proved environmentally friendly. Val-de-Reuil, established as a planned new town in the 1970s, has frequently experimented with modern urban design concepts.

Pedestrian crossing innovations

Municipalities across France are testing a range of innovative technologies to enhance pedestrian safety on public roads. In Les Andelys, another municipality in the Eure department, local authorities have been experimenting for three years with a pedestrian crossing system that remains unique in France. The system uses cameras to detect pedestrians as they step out, triggering flashing safety lights.

Les Andelys, situated along the Seine River in Normandy, forms part of a broader nationwide movement where French towns are trialing phosphorescent paints, blue light beams, and active LED ground displays to protect pedestrians at night.

Similar safety initiatives have also been deployed internationally. Municipalities in Israel and South Korea have installed illuminated ground strips at pedestrian crossings that change color in coordination with traffic signals, preventing distracted or reckless pedestrians from stepping onto the road against a red light.
