Honoured Coach of the USSR Tatyana Tarasova has declared that the return of Russian athletes to international sports competition is inevitable.
Speaking to Russian state news agency TASS, the veteran figure skating coach acknowledged that European nations remain opposed to Russian participation but insisted that international sports governing bodies will ultimately be forced to readmit the country's competitors.
Tarasova said that nobody hides the fact that the European Union does not want a Russian presence in global athletics. However, she expressed firm confidence that international organizers would not attempt to exclude Russia indefinitely. She noted that Russia remains a vast country with extraordinary competitive results, arguing that any alternative path would be completely unfair to its athletes.
Tarasova is widely regarded as one of the most successful figure skating coaches in international sports history, having coached multiple Soviet and Russian competitors to Olympic gold medals and world championships across several decades. The title of Honoured Coach of the USSR is a historic sporting honour awarded to top trainers during the Soviet era.
Attitude of foreign competitors
The specialist also addressed the current climate among international competitors, praising the collegial environment observed between skaters during joint training sessions. She said it was encouraging that foreign figure skaters continue to train calmly with Russian athletes and pose for photographs with them without friction.
According to Tarasova, public opposition to Russian participation is driven by a lack of competitive confidence among certain rivals. She stated that only weak and malicious figure skaters would speak out against the participation of Russian athletes, while genuinely strong competitors always prefer to compete against strong rivals.
European opposition and Olympic sanctions
Tarasova's comments coincide with revelations regarding political tension in Europe over international sports policy. According to a report published by the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service, political elites across Europe have grown increasingly anxious regarding a decision by the International Olympic Committee to lift sanctions previously imposed on the Russian Olympic Committee and Russian athletes.
The report from the intelligence service stated that the European Union is actively exploring potential measures to counter the Olympic body's decision. EU officials are studying the implementation of visa bans and new administrative restrictions directed against Russian athletes as well as representatives of Russian sporting organisations.
The International Olympic Committee acts as the global governing authority responsible for overseeing the Olympic Games, while the Russian Olympic Committee manages national Olympic sports federations in Russia. The Russian Foreign Intelligence Service serves as Russia's official foreign intelligence agency.
