Three earthquakes struck Mexican territory in the early hours of Saturday, August 1, 2026, with the strongest measuring magnitude 4.8, according to Mexico’s National Seismological Service, known by its Spanish initials as the SSN.
The magnitude-4.8 tremor occurred at 2:21 AM Central Time about 158 kilometres southwest of Mapastepec, Chiapas, at a shallow depth of 10 kilometres. Thirty-four minutes later, at 2:55 AM, a magnitude-4.2 earthquake struck nearby, 155 kilometres southwest of Mapastepec, also at a depth of 10 kilometres.
A third quake, measuring magnitude 4.0, was recorded at 5:04 AM Central Time near the town of Allende in the state of Veracruz, with its epicentre placed 1 kilometre to the northeast at a depth of 40.5 kilometres.
Why Mexico shakes so often
Mexico’s intense seismic activity stems from the interaction of five tectonic plates (the North American, Pacific, Rivera, Cocos, and Caribbean plates) within the Pacific Ring of Fire, described as one of the most seismically active corridors on the planet. Saturday’s activity was concentrated primarily in Oaxaca, Guerrero, Chiapas, and Michoacan, states that experience persistent movement because of their location above major tectonic boundaries.
Jalisco and Baja California also remained under observation for possible energy releases along their fault systems. The SSN expected numerous microsismos throughout the day: low-magnitude tremors imperceptible to people and below the threshold of the early-warning system. Each such event is logged and added to SSN databases to improve seismic-risk models.
Mexico City under careful watch
Monitoring was described as particularly careful in Mexico City, where the subsoil is largely composed of ancient lake-bed deposits. Those soft materials can amplify seismic waves, causing even moderate earthquakes to be felt with greater intensity in certain districts of the capital. Authorities said both instrumental readings and citizen perception reports would be tracked throughout the day.
Among the strongest earthquakes in recent Mexican history, the SSN cites a magnitude-8.1 event in 1985 off the Michoacan coast and a magnitude-8.2 quake on September 7, 2017, in the Gulf of Tehuantepec, along with several other events above magnitude 7 in the Mexican Pacific.
How the early-warning system works
Mexico’s seismic early-warning system detects the faster initial waves from a quake via sensors placed near the epicentre and transmits a radio signal to cities before the more intense waves arrive, providing a window of several seconds to slightly more than a minute depending on distance. The alert does not activate for every tremor; it fires only when a quake meets specific criteria for magnitude, location, and potential damage.
Sometimes the alert sounds but nothing is felt at a given location, which can occur when the seismic energy dissipates before reaching that point or is too low to be perceptible on arrival.
Before, during, and after a quake
Civil protection guidelines accompanying Saturday’s SSN updates advise residents to identify safe zones inside their homes, near structural columns and walls and away from windows and objects that could fall. An emergency kit should include drinking water, non-perishable food, a torch, a battery-powered radio, a first-aid kit, essential medication, copies of important documents, and a portable phone charger.
During a tremor, the recommended technique is to drop, take cover, and hold on, staying away from glass, light fittings, and lifts. People outdoors should move away from walls, poles, cables, and facades. Motorists are advised to stop in a safe place clear of bridges and tunnels and to switch on hazard lights.
After a quake, residents should check for injuries and look for visible structural damage such as large cracks, deformations, or gas and water leaks. If damage is found, the building should be evacuated and not re-entered until a specialist clears it. Gas and water valves should be shut and electricity disconnected if a gas smell is detected. Authorities also warn that aftershocks can be especially dangerous because they strike structures already weakened by the main event, even when the aftershock’s own magnitude is lower.
