Timelapse Captures Kithairon Wildfire's Path to Porto Germeno

A timelapse video filmed from the summit of Mount Kithairon has captured the spread of a destructive wildfire that broke out in southern Boeotia and moved toward Porto Germeno, leaving vast burned areas and heavy damage behind.

The footage came from a camera installed on the mountain's peak by the E.RA.DIK association, with help from volunteers and supporters. The association said the camera and an accompanying weather station were set up to record weather phenomena and monitor the natural environment, but instead captured one of the area's most destructive fires in recent years.

Fire's Rapid Spread

The timelapse shows the fire front spreading rapidly across Kithairon's southern slopes, with flames advancing toward the wider Porto Germeno area in the early morning hours of August 1. The images show huge fire fronts developing over a large area, with the blaze intense enough to produce pyrocumulus clouds, formed by heat and gases released during major forest fires.

Fire Reaches Saronic Coast

The fire broke out in southern Boeotia and, aided by unfavorable weather conditions, spread quickly toward Porto Germeno, coming close to the shores of the Saronic Gulf. Its advance was halted when it met already burned areas, zones with limited fuel, and the sea itself.
