Turkey defeated Germany 3-1 in Group A of the Women's European Volleyball Championship on Wednesday evening to maintain their unbeaten record at the tournament.
Opposite hitter Melissa Vargas scored a match-high 23 points for the Turkish team, who were heavy favorites under head coach Daniele Santarelli, securing a 25-21, 25-27, 25-20, 25-19 victory.
The result leaves Turkey top of Group A with 12 points, keeping them on track to win the group ahead of their final group fixture against Poland.
Turkey control opening sets
Turkey opened the match strongly, taking an early five-point lead before Germany reduced the margin to 7-9. Effective blocking and scoring from Vargas helped Turkey pull ahead by eight points. Germany narrowed the gap to 20-23 late in the first set, but Turkey closed out a 25-21 win after a service error by German player Monique Strubbe.
The second set proved to be the closest of the match, with both sides trading points throughout. Turkey built a four-to-five-point cushion and came within two points of taking the set. However, Germany mounted a late comeback to level the score at 23-23. Germany clinched the set 27-25 when Elif Sahin failed to win a net battle against German blocker Camilla Weitzel.
Turkey regained control in the third set, maintaining a five-to-six-point lead throughout. The tournament co-hosts sealed the set 25-20 with a successful attack from Vargas.
In the fourth set, Germany fell behind by six points and were unable to mount another recovery. Turkey wrapped up the final set 25-19 to complete the 3-1 match win.
Group A standings and tournament context
The European Volleyball Championship, also known as EuroVolley, is the biennial continental tournament for women's national teams organized by the European Volleyball Confederation. Turkey is serving as one of the co-host nations for the competition.
Following Wednesday's victory, Turkey top Group A with 12 points from four matches, having won 12 sets and lost two while scoring 348 points and conceding 274.
Poland sit second in the group with nine points and a 9-1 set record, scoring 253 points against 204. The Polish team, coached by Stefano Lavarini, opened their group campaign with three consecutive wins: a 3-0 victory against Hungary (25-12, 26-24, 25-20), a 3-1 win over Latvia (25-19, 23-25, 25-22, 26-24), and a 3-0 sweep of Slovenia (25-14, 28-26, 25-18).
Germany rank third in Group A with six points and a 7-7 set record (313-300 points). Slovenia lie fourth with five points from a 7-8 set record (319-328 points), followed by Latvia in fifth with one point from a 4-12 set ratio (302-369 points). Hungary sit bottom of the group without a point or a set win (167-227 points).
Decisive matches and knockout scenarios
Poland have already guaranteed at least a third-place finish in Group A and will battle Turkey for the top spot over the remaining two matchdays. Poland face Germany on Thursday at 15:00 local time in the penultimate round before taking on Turkey in Friday's group finale.
According to an analysis by volleyball analyst Jakub Balcerzak, finishing top of Group A would set up a round of 16 matchup for Poland against either Portugal or Romania. If Poland finish second in the group, they will instead face either the Netherlands or Azerbaijan in the first knockout stage.
