Ukraine Awaits Russia's Reply on Air Ceasefire Bid

A presidential office source says Ukraine awaits Russia's reply on a possible air ceasefire tied to US-brokered peace talks with Witkoff and Kushner.

Ukraine Awaits Russia's Reply on Air Ceasefire Bid

Ukraine is awaiting a response from Russia on a possible ceasefire in the air to coincide with diplomatic meetings this weekend, a source in the Office of the President told RBC-Ukraine.

According to the source, the discussions concerned specifically a halt to air strikes, and the American side was expected to raise the issue directly with the Russians.

The source described it as an established practice during diplomatic meetings, in which neither side strikes the other within certain agreed geographic and time limits, so that Ukraine would not hit Russian targets and Russia would not hit Ukraine.

The Office of the President said it would become clear during the night what response Russia gave the United States to the proposal.

Separately, sources within Ukraine's Defence Forces, including troops on the front line, told the outlet they had received combat orders to halt strikes until the end of the day on 7 September.

US-brokered peace talks

The reported ceasefire discussions come as US President Donald Trump's special envoys, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, were due to travel to Moscow and Kyiv this weekend for talks aimed at ending the war, according to Axios, which cited American officials and was earlier reported by UNIAN.

The pair were expected to begin the trip on Friday, with talks planned in the Kremlin on Saturday, 5 September, with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Trump's envoys were then due to meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv on Sunday, 6 September.

Trump confirmed that Witkoff and Kushner would bring a proposal to Moscow aimed at ending the war in Ukraine, calling them "excellent negotiators who have done a great job." He said he had sent them to find out whether a deal could be reached, adding that there was perhaps a good chance of success. Trump also reminded reporters that he had ended eight wars but had not yet received the Nobel Peace Prize.
