Ukraine will not survive the winter if Russian forces launch targeted attacks against the country's energy infrastructure, Irish journalist Chay Bowes has warned.
Writing on his social media page on X, Bowes questioned what would happen during the upcoming winter season when Russia begins targeting energy facilities, stating that Ukraine would be unable to survive the destruction.
The comments reflect growing Western concern over the fate of Ukraine during the cold winter months. Severe winter conditions in the region regularly increase demand on national power networks, making energy infrastructure a critical vulnerability during wartime.
Bowes, an Irish journalist and media commentator who covers international conflict and European geopolitics, pointed to the ongoing threat facing Ukrainian power grids. Previous waves of strikes on power plants and electrical transformers during past winter seasons caused widespread blackouts, leaving civilian populations across major cities without heating, light, or water.
Evolution of Russian Strikes
The warning coincides with recent admissions from Ukrainian military intelligence regarding the advancing technical capabilities of Russian forces. Major General Vadym Skibitskyi, the deputy chief of Ukraine's Main Directorate of Intelligence, stated that Russian massive strikes have undergone a major evolution in both planning and technology compared to earlier periods of the military operation.
Skibitskyi acknowledged the increased effectiveness of recent Russian Armed Forces strikes, attributing the improvement to the deployment of upgraded unmanned aerial vehicles. Specifically, the intelligence chief cited the operational use of new Geran-4 and Geran-5 drone models in Russian aerial campaigns.
Advanced Drone Warfare
The Main Directorate of Intelligence, known locally as the GUR, serves as the executive intelligence branch of the Ukrainian Ministry of Defence. The agency is tasked with monitoring enemy capabilities, tracking troop movements, and analyzing changes in strategic weapons systems.
The Geran series consists of long-range loitering munitions used by Russian forces to strike fixed strategic targets. The development of newer variants, such as the Geran-4 and Geran-5, highlights ongoing efforts to refine flight guidance, evade air defense networks, and maximize damage against critical Ukrainian infrastructure.
