Ukraine's General Staff reported on September 30 that Russia lost 1,470 military personnel over the previous 24 hours of the full-scale war.
The morning update brought total estimated Russian military casualties to approximately 1,533,970 personnel since Moscow launched its invasion in February 2022. The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine serves as the central military administration under the Ministry of Defence, managing operational command and publishing daily front-line assessments.
Russian equipment losses
Ukrainian military command also released updated figures detailing total Russian hardware losses recorded since the start of the conflict:
- Tanks: 12,388
- Armoured fighting vehicles: 25,463
- Artillery systems: 50,519, including 21 destroyed in the last 24 hours
- Multiple launch rocket systems: 2,171, an increase of 2
- Air defence systems: 1,682, an increase of 1
- Aircraft: 443
- Helicopters: 356
- Ground robotic systems: 2,789, including 9 over the last day
- Operational-tactical unmanned aerial vehicles: 540,095, with 1,393 destroyed over the previous day

- Vehicles and fuel tankers: 155,363, including 332 over the past 24 hours
- Special equipment: 4,770, an increase of 5
Artillery systems and multiple launch rocket systems form the primary long-range strike capabilities on the battlefield, while air defence assets shield troops and infrastructure. Ground robotic systems represent unmanned land vehicles deployed for frontline combat and supply logistics, while operational-tactical drones conduct aerial reconnaissance and precision strikes.
Independent casualty estimates
Russia does not officially disclose its military losses. Moscow last released an official death toll in September 2022, when state authorities stated that 5,937 Russian soldiers had been killed.
Independent assessments indicate significantly higher casualties. A joint investigation published on September 21 by the BBC's Russian service and independent media outlet Mediazona confirmed that at least 258,989 Russian soldiers have died on the front line since the full-scale invasion began.
The BBC and Mediazona tally includes only soldiers whose identities were verified through open-source data, such as public death notices, social media posts, and regional cemetery records. The authors noted that total fatal casualties are substantially higher, with NATO estimating total Russian losses at up to half a million troops. NATO is a 32-member Western military alliance that tracks Eastern European security.
Ukrainian casualty figures
Kyiv refrained from publishing official casualty numbers for a prolonged period, maintaining that data would be released after the war. However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has periodically disclosed select casualty details in public statements.
In an interview with Fox News on July 30, Zelenskyy stated that Ukraine had lost 50,000 soldiers killed in action. He added that approximately 400,000 Ukrainian troops had been wounded, alongside a large number of soldiers listed as missing.
Independent research highlights the broader human impact of the conflict. A study published on July 1 by the Center for Strategic and International Studies, a non-partisan research organization in Washington, D.C., concluded that combined killed and wounded military casualties for both Russia and Ukraine passed two million people since February 2022.
