Buckwheat prices in Ukraine are expected to rise by 3 to 5 percent in August, reaching 80 to 83 hryvnias per kilogram, Doctor of Economic Sciences Svitlana Cheremisina told 24 Kanal. Cheremisina, chief research fellow in the department of agrarian market and international integration at the Institute of Agrarian Economics, said buckwheat will likely see the largest increase among all grains, while other grain costs will change more moderately following seasonal market dynamics.
The projected increase follows a 3.3 percent price drop in July, which brought buckwheat down to 76.67 hryvnias per kilogram. Cheremisina described the July drop as a temporary decline rather than a long-term trend, noting that buckwheat has risen 70.8 percent in price since the beginning of 2026. She warned consumers not to expect further price drops despite seasonal supply increases, citing stable consumer demand, high production costs, and limited supply of Ukrainian raw materials. She added that buckwheat production in Ukraine is less large-scale than other grains, making the market sensitive to crop yields, stocks, and economic conditions, with processing, energy, logistics, and labor costs heavily driving retail prices.
Vegetable price trends
Meanwhile, vegetable prices in Ukraine mostly declined last week. Tomato prices fell from 60-75 hryvnias to 45-65 hryvnias per kilogram, while cucumbers dropped from 18-45 hryvnias to 15-30 hryvnias per kilogram. Sweet peppers lost 15 hryvnias per kilogram over the week, falling from 45-100 hryvnias to 30-85 hryvnias per kilogram. Prices for sweet corn nearly halved, falling from 18-24 hryvnias to 10-13 hryvnias per piece.
