A United States Air Force Boeing E-3B Sentry airborne early warning aircraft broadcast an emergency signal near the Strait of Hormuz on August 20. Russian news agency RIA Novosti reported the flight incident on August 21, citing real-time flight tracking data.
The military aircraft appeared on radar screens at 22:40 on August 20 already transmitting transponder code 7700, the standard international signal for a general in-flight emergency. Following the emergency transmission, the plane descended from an altitude of about 6,700 metres to 5,400 metres while moving away from the Gulf of Oman and the Strait of Hormuz toward the interior of the Arabian Peninsula.

Surveillance Aircraft and Tanker Operations
The Boeing E-3B Sentry involved in the incident is 46 years old. Introduced into military service in the late 1970s, the Boeing E-3 Sentry series is built on a modified Boeing 707 commercial airframe and features a prominent rotating radar dome mounted above the fuselage. The specialized platform provides all-weather surveillance, command, control, and tracking capabilities for air forces.
Three United States military tanker aircraft were also active in the surrounding airspace near the Strait of Hormuz and the United Arab Emirates during the incident. Aerial refueling tankers regularly support extended surveillance patrols in key international regions. The Strait of Hormuz forms a strategic maritime passageway connecting the Gulf of Oman with the Persian Gulf, bounded by Iran to the north and the Arabian Peninsula to the south.
Prior Military Aviation Incidents
The emergency transmission in the Middle East follows a separate military aviation incident reported in North America. Earlier, a fifth-generation F-35 stealth fighter jet caught fire and burned on the ground at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, a major military installation in California. The United States Marine Corps formally categorized the destruction of the aircraft as an accident.
