Dominican athlete Yeisi Tejeda won the bronze medal in the women's javelin throw on Tuesday at the XXV Central American and Caribbean Games in Santo Domingo. Competing in front of enthusiastic local fans at the Estadio Olimpico Felix Sanchez track and field stadium, Tejeda recorded a distance of 54.95 meters to secure third place on the continental podium.
Tejeda is known for her versatility on the track, which allows her to compete at the highest level in the demanding heptathlon discipline. She demonstrated great composure in the throwing area to deliver a medal in an event that is non-traditional for Dominican athletics.
Colombian Record and Competition Results
The women's javelin throw featured an extraordinary technical level, with Colombia claiming the top two spots. Flor Ruiz retained her title and took the gold medal with an impressive throw of 67.34 meters.
With that attempt, Ruiz broke the previous games record of 63.80 meters, which she had set herself at the Veracruz 2014 edition. Her Colombian teammate Valentina Barrios captured the silver medal with a best attempt of 58.14 meters.
Dominican Athletics Medal Tally
Tejeda's performance gives the host delegation its sixth athletics medal at the historic multi-sport event. The competition will run through next Saturday, featuring delegations from 37 participating countries.
The Dominican Republic athletics team has built a successful medal harvest at this edition of the games. The squad's achievements are led by gold medals from marathon runner Alvaro Abreu, sprinter Liranyi Alonso in the women's 100 meters, and the mixed 4x400 meter relay team. Alonso set a new games record during her 100-meter victory.
Tejeda's bronze also adds to earlier third-place finishes won for the host country by Melbin Marcelino in the men's 100 meters and Ana Tima in the triple jump.
