Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky held a phone call with U.S. Vice President JD Vance, saying the conversation was productive and followed up on his recent meeting with President Donald Trump in Washington.
Zelensky said they discussed the results of that Washington meeting, which he described as positive and productive. He stressed that Russian air strikes on Ukraine have not stopped and that air defence, specifically Patriot interceptor missiles against ballistic threats, remains the top priority.
The two leaders also discussed the effects of the Russian war on global markets, Zelensky said, adding that their teams agreed to stay in contact and work through what was discussed.
According to media reports cited by Ukrainian news agency UNIAN, Trump declined during the July 28 Washington meeting to supply the 300 Patriot interceptor missiles Zelensky had requested. An analysis by the Center for Strategic and International Studies found that war in Iran has depleted roughly two-thirds of U.S. stocks of those missiles, leaving approximately 759 of the most advanced Patriot missiles in American arsenals.
