A 4.1 magnitude earthquake struck the Murcia region of Spain on Sunday, with its epicenter located near the town of Librilla at a depth of five kilometers. The National Geographic Institute recorded the quake at 11:59 a.m. local time.
The tremor was felt clearly in the city of Murcia, about 30 kilometers from the epicenter, as well as in the neighboring provinces of Alicante and Albacete.
Despite the quake lasting several seconds, emergency services reported no personal injuries or material damage. The 112 emergency line received around 80 calls from residents in various parts of the region in the half-hour following the tremor, including callers from Bullas and Cartagena.
Intensity Levels Across the Region
The National Geographic Institute uses a scale of 1 to 10 to measure how a quake is perceived. The highest intensity recorded in this event was level 4, reached in the Murcian district of Javali Nuevo and in Mula and its district of La Puebla.
Intensity between grade 3 and 4 was recorded in Abanilla, Blanca, Ceuti, Molina de Segura, El Esparragal, Rincon de Seca, San Gines, Sangonera la Seca, and Abaran. A grade 3 intensity was felt in Archena, Murcia, Bullas, Totana, Librilla itself, Las Torres de Cotillas, Lorqui, Ricote, and Villanueva del Rio Segura.
Outside the Murcia region, the quake was weaker. In the provinces of Albacete and Alicante, the institute recorded an intensity of grade 2, indicating it was felt by very few people.
