PAOK head coach Andrea Trinchieri has warned his team that only their best defensive effort will stop high-scoring Roma in Tuesday's EuroCup fixture.

Andrea Trinchieri demands peak PAOK defense against Roma

PAOK head coach Andrea Trinchieri has warned that his team must deliver their best defensive performance to overcome Roma in Tuesday's EuroCup fixture.

The Thessaloniki club hosts the Italian side at the PAOK Sports Arena at 20:00 on 3 November for round six of the continental tournament, seeking a vital response after suffering a defeat against Bahcesehir.

Trinchieri stressed that his players had received ample time to prepare for the clash, but cautioned that the visiting Italian squad possesses genuine NBA-level talent capable of tearing through unprepared opposition. He identified guard Nico Mannion and veteran forward Kelly Olynyk as primary offensive catalysts who can create immediate problems for the Greek side.

Roma offensive threat and player depth

The Italian coach warned that Roma has assembled a potent attacking unit capable of putting up 120 points on any given night. He pointed out that the threat extends well beyond the starting lineup, naming Stevenson, Strautins, Simonovic, Corey Davis, and Watson as dangerous contributors who can each score 20 points in a single contest.

Faced with such scoring depth, Trinchieri stated that PAOK cannot afford defensive lapses if they hope to remain competitive. He emphasized that returning to their home court after the European loss to Bahcesehir makes the fixture especially significant, adding that the squad is determined to perform in front of their home supporters and produce their highest level of basketball.

The EuroCup, organized by Euroleague Basketball, serves as Europe's second-tier club competition, where early group matches carry immense weight for qualification into the knockout rounds. For PAOK, established as one of northern Greece's traditional sporting powerhouses, European nights in Thessaloniki represent both a prestige stage and a demanding test of endurance.

Defensive rebuilding and team chemistry

Outlining his developmental philosophy, Trinchieri explained that his primary ambition is to see steady growth in every outing. He wants his players to refine specific elements of their play each time they step onto the court, improving their offensive efficiency, their defensive solidity, and their ability to read in-game situations as they unfold.

Trinchieri noted that this progress is already visible across recent fixtures. Reflecting on their Saturday contest against city rivals Iraklis, he highlighted how the opponent forced PAOK into a particular style of play, yet his team adapted successfully and handled the tactical challenge well.

However, the head coach acknowledged that building a cohesive unit remains an ongoing challenge. Trinchieri emphasized that none of the players on the roster had played alongside each other prior to this season, and he had never coached any of them in his previous managerial stops across Europe.

That total lack of prior familiarity means the coaching staff must constantly address fundamental details. Trinchieri explained that when coaches introduce a tactical adjustment, the players often execute it, only for the staff to discover that other fundamentals were neglected or that smaller details slipped through without proper attention.

The coach stated that PAOK is working intensively to establish a consistent, reliable defensive structure. While he believes the team is getting closer to that objective, he warned that the defensive level shown in Saturday's domestic victory will not be enough to stop Roma on Tuesday.

Turnover control and transition defense

From the locker room, PAOK guard Breein Tyree underlined the defensive discipline required to contain the Italian visitors. The American playmaker insisted that the black-and-whites must sharply reduce their unforced errors if they want to control the flow of the contest.

Tyree described the meeting as another demanding European test, pointing to Roma's fast break as a danger area that PAOK must manage. He explained that PAOK must control Roma in transition after both made and missed shots, preventing the visitors from running the floor and getting comfortable looks from three-point range.

While acknowledging Roma's firepower and the necessity of slowing them down, Tyree maintained that PAOK must not lose their own identity. He stated that the hosts must run their own offense with good tempo, fluid rhythm, and sharp ball movement to generate high-percentage scoring opportunities.

Early season progress and tactical adaptability

Reflecting on PAOK's identity, Tyree noted that the season is still in its opening phase. He observed that the team continues to develop and improve daily, adding that it is encouraging to see the squad win games through defensive grit rather than depending entirely on outside shooting, even though the roster has the talent to score in bunches.

Tyree pointed out that with the calendar only at the start of November, PAOK possesses substantial margin for growth. He expects both the collective performance and the defensive consistency to rise throughout the campaign as the coaching staff adds new tactical systems and the team confronts stiffer European competition.

The American guard expressed complete confidence in Trinchieri's preparation and in the ability of his teammates to execute tactical adjustments. Tyree said PAOK has the offensive quality and versatility to react to whatever tactical wrinkles opponents throw at them, affirming that the team will enter Tuesday fully prepared to battle for the win.

Athletic highlights and domestic momentum

Tyree also addressed his spectacular domestic highlight from Saturday's game against Iraklis, where an emphatic slam dunk electrified the home crowd. The guard explained that he spotted an open driving lane directly to the basket and seized the opening to finish the play at the rim.

Acknowledging that supporters already know his physical capabilities, Tyree joked that the dunk still appeared to catch onlookers by surprise. He added that high-flying athleticism has always been an organic part of his game, and he looks forward to bringing that same energy into Tuesday's European battle with Roma.
