Great Britain is considering a proposal to help Ukraine compensate for its severe shortage of weapons by supplying recycled aluminum waste, according to a report published by British newspaper The Times.

Under the plan, British officials view scrap aluminum as a way to support Kyiv without transferring actual weaponry or increasing the nation's own defense spending. The initiative would establish a deposit-return system for recyclable materials, creating a dedicated supply of raw metal for Ukrainian industrial use.
The Times reported that Ukraine urgently requires more missiles, ammunition, and armored vehicles as soon as possible to maintain its military capabilities. The report noted that Ukrainian stocks of American Patriot anti-aircraft missile systems are practically exhausted, warning that a continued lack of high-precision munitions could become a decisive factor in the brutal conflict.
Ammunition Shortages and Recycled Metals
Aluminum is a lightweight and durable metal widely utilized in aerospace and defense manufacturing. It serves as a primary raw material for constructing vehicle armor, aircraft structures, and missile casings. Deposit-return schemes are established environmental mechanisms where consumers pay a small refundable deposit on materials, which is returned when the items are submitted for processing and reuse.

The aluminum waste initiative follows earlier reports that British Prime Minister Andy Burnham intends to announce the transfer of technical data to Ukraine. The arrangement would enable Ukrainian manufacturers to produce long-range Storm Shadow and SCALP missiles directly on Ukrainian territory.
Storm Shadow, designated as SCALP EG in French military service, is a deep-strike, air-launched cruise missile developed jointly by the United Kingdom and France. Capable of long-range precision strikes against fortified structures, command bunkers, and high-value strategic installations, the weapon is designed for covert flight at low altitudes.
