British Investor Recovers Lost Bitcoins After 12 Years

A British investor named Chris has regained access to his bitcoin holdings after 12 years of unsuccessful attempts to reach the company holding his funds.

The recovery followed a four-month investigation and legal proceeding launched earlier this year after Chris hired a law firm to track down the missing cryptocurrency. Lawyers used blockchain analysis to trace the transaction history and located a hidden wallet on Intersango, an early digital currency exchange platform.

To confirm that Chris held the legal rights to the assets, his legal team retrieved bank statements dating back 15 years. Following the court proceedings, the investor successfully recovered his digital assets.

Bitcoin is a decentralized cryptocurrency that relies on a public digital ledger called a blockchain to record transactions. Intersango operated as one of the early online exchanges where traders bought and sold digital currencies.

Legal investigation and recovery

Chris spent more than a decade trying to contact the company to reclaim his funds without success. Over the years, watching the market value of bitcoin rise caused him deep distress.

Chris lamented that watching bitcoin continually increase in value felt like a punch in the gut. He eventually stopped monitoring the exchange rate because he believed the money was permanently lost. Throughout those years, friends frequently teased him by asking where his millions had gone.

Family reaction and housing plans

When news of the legal breakthrough arrived, Chris said his family initially doubted the outcome. They advised him to wait until the bitcoins actually landed inside his personal crypto wallet before celebrating.

Even after the funds reached his wallet, Chris admitted that he continued checking his balance up to 20 times a day to confirm the assets were safe.

Chris told reporters that he plans to keep a portion of the funds in bitcoin while converting the remainder into fiat currency, which is traditional government-backed money. He intends to use the money to move into a larger house.

Similar cryptocurrency recoveries

Lost cryptocurrency recoveries remain rare, but other investors have reported similar breakthroughs. An investor known under the nickname Carl previously reported recovering 0.142 BTC from a damaged hard drive nearly eight years after losing access to his wallet.
