Police in the Russian city of Ivanovo have arrested five men accused of kidnapping a young programmer and stealing more than 10 bitcoins.
According to the Russian business newspaper Kommersant, the suspects held the victim at gunpoint inside a garage, beat him for hours, and extorted cash, electronics, and digital assets worth over 84 million rubles.
Ivanovo is an industrial city of around 360,000 residents located roughly 300 kilometres northeast of Moscow. Kommersant reported that the five detainees face formal charges of kidnapping, robbery, and cryptocurrency theft, which carry sentences of up to 15 years in prison under Russian law.
Social media tracking and garage abduction
Investigators said the gang singled out the programmer after discovering his public social media profile. Photographs posted online showed the victim, who is in his early twenties and supplies products to major commercial companies, driving luxury Ferrari, BMW, and Mercedes vehicles, as well as travelling abroad frequently.
After putting the young developer under physical surveillance to learn his daily routines, the gang attacked him on September 6 as he walked to a local shop. The assailants handcuffed him in the street and forced him into a vehicle before taking him to the Energetik garage cooperative.
Inside the garage, men wearing balaclavas and armed with handguns beat the programmer for several hours. The attackers threatened to torture him with a clothes iron and a soldering iron, and warned they would cut off his ears if he did not comply with their demands.
Extortion payment and forest abandonment
Under pressure from his captors, the victim surrendered 1 million rubles in cash alongside his iPhone and MacBook laptop. The attackers then transferred nearly 10.4 bitcoins from his cryptocurrency wallets to an account belonging to an individual unknown to investigators.
After the extortion, the gang drove the programmer to a nearby forest and abandoned him there with his hands tied. Bitcoin is a decentralised digital cryptocurrency recorded on an immutable blockchain ledger, meaning transactions cannot be reversed once confirmed by the network.

Drone strike and phone tap breakthrough
Ivanovo police said a stroke of luck led directly to the identification and capture of the suspects. An internet outage struck the city during a Ukrainian aerial drone attack, knocking out the encrypted messaging applications that the gang normally used to communicate.
Deprived of internet messenger services, the suspects switched to standard cellular telephone lines to discuss their activities. Russian security services intercepted the unencrypted mobile telephone conversations, tracked the physical locations of the callers, and arrested all five men.
Police said the suspects had already spent part of the stolen money on buying residential apartments and cars. All five men had previously served prison sentences for serious crimes and originally met while serving time in Russian penal colonies.

Rising attacks on cryptocurrency owners
Investigators are now checking the detainees for involvement in other similar crimes across the region. Law enforcement authorities worldwide have noted an increasing number of physical extortion schemes targeting individuals known or believed to hold substantial cryptocurrency reserves.
Chainalysis, a blockchain analytics firm based in the United States, recorded 46 physical attacks targeting cryptocurrency holders between January and June, resulting in total losses exceeding $30 million.
