Spanish businessman and former public official Carlos Espinosa de los Monteros has died at the age of 82.
Espinosa de los Monteros, who served as president of national airline Iberia and was the father of former Vox political leader Iván Espinosa de los Monteros, built an extensive career spanning senior corporate executive roles and public administration focused on promoting Spain internationally.
Between 2012 and 2018, he was appointed by the Council of Ministers to serve as the government's first High Commissioner for Brand Spain. In that position, he directed the national strategy to coordinate and strengthen Spain's public image and international corporate reputation.
His work for the Spanish public sector also included serving as Spain's commercial councillor in Chicago, as well as holding the roles of commercial director and vice president at the National Industry Institute, the state holding enterprise created to drive industrial development.
Corporate leadership across major industries
Espinosa de los Monteros held senior leadership posts across several of Spain's major commercial enterprises. He served as president of flag carrier Iberia and regional airline Aviaco, led automotive operations at Mercedes Benz España and Daimler-Chrysler, and headed the historic sherry and spirits producer González-Byass.
He also took a prominent role in business advocacy, serving as president of the Círculo de Empresarios think tank and leading ANFAC, the national trade association representing Spanish automobile and truck manufacturers.
In addition to his chief executive positions, he served on the governing boards of major international corporations, including Spanish clothing giant Inditex, infrastructure conglomerate Acciona, and Swiss elevator manufacturer Schindler.
Espinosa de los Monteros completed his academic training in Madrid, earning a degree in Law from the Complutense University of Madrid and a degree in Business Administration from ICADE at Comillas Pontifical University.
Tributes paid to former public servant
Tributes followed news of his death on Saturday. Javier Ortega Smith, former secretary general of the conservative Vox party, expressed condolences on social media platform X, describing Espinosa de los Monteros as a great father, a great person, a patriot, and an extraordinary professional, adding that prayers would be offered for him.
His son, Iván Espinosa de los Monteros, publicly acknowledged the tribute on X, offering his thanks to Ortega Smith.
The Atenea Foundation, an entity linked to his son, also issued a statement honoring his career. The foundation described him as an exemplary figure whose professionalism and commitment left an enduring mark, stating that his legacy would remain alive for those who worked alongside him.
