Peruvian volleyball legend Cecilia Tait called for strict sanctions against players who refuse call-ups to the Peru women's national volleyball team, suggesting suspensions from domestic league play.
Speaking in an interview with Central Vóley, the Olympic medalist expressed frustration over multiple players declining invitations to represent the senior national squad ahead of upcoming international competitions.

Tait emphasized that wearing the national jersey is a privilege that few athletes achieve, arguing that players who turn down call-ups should face immediate penalties. She urged authorities to issue suspensions that would extend to domestic league competition, stating that those unwilling to play should remain at home rather than set a negative example for younger generations.
Addressing her position as a member of the Peruvian Olympic Committee, the International Volleyball Federation, and the South American Volleyball Confederation, Tait acknowledged that her official roles might suggest a more restrained tone. However, she maintained that her primary commitment remains with defending the Peruvian flag and national team.
Call for league suspensions
Tait contrasted the senior rejections with the commitment shown by Peru's under-17 national team, which recently finished 13th at the U17 Volleyball World Championship in Chile. She noted that players who have never stood on a podium at world-level tournaments lack true international experience, adding that domestic league success alone does not compare to representing the nation on the global stage.
Tait is one of the most prominent figures in Peruvian sports history, having led the national volleyball team to a silver medal at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul. Volleyball has long held a significant place in Peru's sporting culture, with national team selections carrying high public expectations and historical pride.
Preparation for South American Championship
The national team, known as Las Matadoras, is currently preparing under head coach Antonio Rizola for the upcoming South American Volleyball Championship. The regional tournament serves as a key qualifier, offering three berths for the World Championship and one spot for the 2027 Olympic Games.
Peru will open its tournament campaign against Argentina on Tuesday, September 8. The team is also scheduled to face Brazil, Venezuela, Colombia, and Chile during the group stage of the competition.
