Christos Dimas approves 86 million euro irrigation plan

Greek Infrastructure and Transport Minister Christos Dimas has approved tendering procedures for two major irrigation projects in Kastoria and Karditsa worth over 86 million euros.

The decision authorises bidding for the completion of the Nestorio Dam in the Regional Unit of Kastoria, budgeted at 59.25 million euros including VAT and option rights, alongside a 27.46 million euro modernization of the Sellana irrigation network in Karditsa.

According to official announcements, both interventions aim to ensure rational water management, upgrade regional agricultural infrastructure, and strengthen Greece's primary economic sector.

Nestorio Dam completion

The completion of the Nestorio Dam and its accompanying works represents one of the most critical agricultural infrastructure investments in Western Macedonia.

Once finished, the dam will supply sufficient water to cover the irrigation needs of approximately 70,000 stremmata of farmland, supporting more than 5,000 local farmers and boosting regional agricultural production.

Ministry representatives said that approving the tender marks the restart of the vital project after necessary technical and administrative procedures were completed.

Kastoria is located in Western Macedonia in northern Greece, where local agriculture relies heavily on stable water supplies for seasonal crops.

Sellana network modernization

In Karditsa, the project for the Sellana Local Organisation for Land Reclamation involves placing irrigation borehole networks underground, fully renovating existing wells, and installing modern management systems.

The upgrades are designed to limit water loss, lower operational energy costs, and significantly improve network efficiency for local growers.

The Sellana scheme was initially included in the 2014 to 2020 Rural Development Programme on July 2, 2019. Following extensive damage caused by Storm Daniel and Storm Elias, officials determined that a redesigned plan was necessary.

A new final technical study led to the approval of the fourth amendment of the action on July 11, 2025. On February 20, 2026, a decision was issued to continue the project under the Strategic Plan of the Common Agricultural Policy for 2023 to 2027, securing its funding before advancing to full implementation.

Karditsa is situated in central Greece's Thessaly region, an agricultural hub that suffered widespread infrastructure damage during extreme weather events in late 2023.
