A magnitude 4.4 earthquake struck 19 kilometers south of Chupaca in the Junin region of Peru at 6:11 p.m. on Aug. 7, according to the Geophysical Institute of Peru.
The institute reported that the tremor occurred at a depth of 11 kilometers, at latitude -12.22 and longitude -75.34. According to report IGP/CENSIS/RS 2026-0534, the earthquake reached an intensity of III-IV on the Mercalli scale.
A second tremor shook the province less than an hour later at 7:06 p.m. The Geophysical Institute of Peru reported that the second earthquake measured magnitude 3.7, with an epicenter 21 kilometers southwest of Chupaca and a depth of 10 kilometers.
Recent Earthquakes and Regional Damage
The two events on Friday followed another tremor on Thursday, Aug. 6. The institute reported that Thursday's earthquake measured magnitude 5.0, though a summary report listed it at magnitude 5.5, adding to concerns in communities still suffering from a major earthquake on July 18.
The penultimate seismic event left 15 people injured and more than 100 homes uninhabitable in Junin. Landslides and falling rocks also damaged roads and public infrastructure, complicating travel across the region.
Emergency Kit Recommendations
Due to the risk of ongoing seismic activity, authorities advised residents to prepare safety supplies. The National Institute of Civil Defense recommends packing an emergency backpack with key items for the first days after a disaster.
Recommended hygiene items include hand and bath towels, toothbrushes, toothpaste, and toilet soap. First aid kits should contain bandages, gauze, alcohol, pills, hydrogen peroxide, red aseptil, and family prescription medications.
For supplies and equipment, the agency recommends cash in coins, a fleece blanket, footwear, half-liter bottles of still water, cereal bars, canned food, and chocolates. Communication items include a battery-operated radio, flashlight, whistle, spare keys, and copies of documents such as national identity cards and insurance cards.
Additional items include heavy plastic bags, a multipurpose knife, work gloves, ropes, a lighter, plastic sheeting for flooring or roofing, duct tape, a floor mat, and masks. Special items should also be packed for women, infants, children, and older adults.
