Olympic biathlon champion Émilien Jacquelin made his professional cycling debut on Sunday, August 16, 2026, finishing 88th at the 169.8-kilometer Polynormande road race.

Riding for the Decathlon CMA CGM team, the French athlete spent much of the day at the front of the main pack to control breakaways for team leader Paul Lapeira. French rider Hugo Page of Cofidis took the victory in a sprint finish, edging out Sandy Dujardin of TotalEnergies and Alex Aranburu of Cofidis.
Jacquelin worked for 120 kilometers at the head of the peloton during the French race before fading on the final section. He eased his pace with roughly 50 kilometers remaining, crossing the finish line nearly 12 minutes behind Page.
Early efforts in Normandy peloton
The Polynormande serves as a key round of the Coupe de France, a premier season-long competition series in French professional road cycling. The one-day event is held annually across challenging circuit routes in Normandy, demanding both tactical control and endurance from competing teams.
Jacquelin fulfilled his role as a team worker by riding at the front of the pack to keep early breakaway groups under control. His efforts were designed to protect Lapeira, who entered the competition as the grand favorite for victory.
Lapeira launched his sprint 200 meters from the finish line but was unable to reach the podium, ending the race in 13th place. Decathlon CMA CGM team sprinter Noa Isidore recorded the squad's highest result by finishing fourth.
Despite the team spending significant energy at the front of the race, neither Lapeira nor Isidore could convert Jacquelin's early work into a victory.
Transition from Winter Olympics to cycling
Jacquelin made his transition to professional road racing after winning a gold medal in the team biathlon event at the 2026 Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics. Biathlon is an Olympic winter sport combining high-intensity cross-country skiing with precision rifle marksmanship.
The French athlete rode bicycles during his youth before choosing to concentrate his sporting career on biathlon. In March 2026, Jacquelin signed a six-month contract as a trainee with Decathlon CMA CGM, putting his biathlon career on pause to compete in professional cycling.
In professional road cycling, a trainee contract allows elite teams to sign promising riders for the second half of the season. Trainees, often called stagiaires, provide team support during major summer events while adjusting to the pace of top-tier racing.
Next challenge at Tour du Limousin
Following his debut in Normandy, Jacquelin will continue his summer cycling campaign with another event later in the week. He is set to compete in the Tour du Limousin from August 18 to 21, 2026.
The Tour du Limousin is a four-day professional stage race held in south-central France. The upcoming event will present Jacquelin with a tougher physical test, featuring steeper climbing and significantly more elevation gain than the roads of the Polynormande.
