FC Porto claimed top spot in the Portuguese top flight on Sunday with a 2-0 victory over early season leaders Arouca at the Estadio do Dragao.
Spanish midfielder Gabri Veiga broke the deadlock in the 67th minute before substitute Borja Sainz added a second four minutes from time to maintain Porto's perfect start to the Primeira Liga campaign.
The win gives Porto three consecutive 2-0 victories to open the league season, following earlier wins against FC Alverca and Rio Ave without conceding a goal.
Arouca defensive resilience at Estadio do Dragao
Arouca arrived in Porto as the unexpected league leaders after winning both of their opening fixtures with a 5-0 goal difference. Defending champions Porto were again without Oskar Pietuszewski as the player continued his rehabilitation, but Polish international defenders Jan Bednarek and Jakub Kiwior both started in defense.
Porto dominated early ball possession but struggled to create clear opportunities until the 30th minute, when Gabri Veiga forced a save from Uruguayan goalkeeper Ignacio De Arruabarrena with a flat long-range shot.
De Arruabarrena came to Arouca's rescue again four minutes later in a one-on-one situation against William Gomes, after the Brazilian forward pressed high to dispossess a defender. Gomes opted to shoot directly rather than pass to parallel runner Andre Silva, with De Arruabarrena making the save.
Porto failed to capitalise on further first-half chances as Pepe misdirected a pass inside the penalty area and Andre Silva headed wide, leaving the match goalless at the interval.
VAR disallowances and Kiwior long-range strike
Porto increased their pressure after the restart, with Pepe firing over the crossbar from a tight angle following a throw-in on the right wing. Moments later, defender Alberto Costa headed home from a Gabri Veiga corner kick, but referee Joao Pinheiro disallowed the goal following a Video Assistant Referee check for a foul on goalkeeper De Arruabarrena.
Porto continued to push forward as William Gomes picked out Pepe with a cross, but the forward's powerful header struck the crossbar. Gomes then tested De Arruabarrena again with a long-range shot that the Uruguayan goalkeeper saved.
The hosts thought they had taken the lead in the 59th minute when Jakub Kiwior struck a powerful shot from outside the penalty area. De Arruabarrena misjudged the effort and the ball dropped over his back into the net, prompting celebrations across the stadium.
However, referee Pinheiro disallowed the goal after a VAR review showed Andre Silva in an offside position, ruling that his ducking movement had obstructed the goalkeeper's view. The decision marked the second consecutive match in which Kiwior was denied his first goal for Porto.
Porto finally broke through in the 67th minute after winning possession on their own half of the pitch. Gomes launched a counter-attack into the penalty area and set up Veiga, who scored with a low finish into the net. The goal stood following a VAR check by the match officials.
Porto almost doubled their lead three minutes later when Victor Froholdt beat his defenders in the penalty area, but De Arruabarrena produced another save. Arouca attempted to build attacking play in the closing stages, but Portugal international goalkeeper Diogo Costa was rarely tested beyond handling routine crosses.
Late Bednarek injury concern
De Arruabarrena denied Borja Sainz in an 85th-minute breakaway, but Sainz converted his second chance a minute later from close range to make it 2-0. Referee Pinheiro briefly delayed the restart before confirming the goal.
Immediately following the goal, Jan Bednarek signaled to the bench requesting to be substituted. The Polish center-back left the pitch and was seen discussing his condition with medical staff on the bench, with Eleven Sports commentators noting his recent injury history.
Porto had a final chance in the last minute of regular time when Sainz set up Froholdt, whose shot was saved by De Arruabarrena, while Arouca substitute Nais Djouahra volleyed wide at the other end. Porto will face Academico de Viseu away in their next Primeira Liga fixture on August 29.
