Ford announced its new mid-size electric pickup model will be called Fathom and will carry a starting price of $28,350. The vehicle will be the first model built on the new Universal EV Platform from Ford, which plans to begin initial customer deliveries in autumn 2027.
The model holds a critical role for electric vehicle operations at Ford. The automaker recorded a $19.5 billion impairment in 2025 due to canceled electric vehicle projects. Ford also ended production of the F-150 Lightning after seeing no profitable future for it, leaving the Mustang Mach-E as the only electric passenger vehicle in its U.S. lineup.
Origin of the Fathom name
The Fathom name marks a major departure from traditional vehicle naming strategies at Ford. In English, the word fathom refers to a unit of depth measurement as well as the action of understanding something. Ford stated that it is drawing on both meanings, adding that Fathom represents a new level of innovation achieved in engineering, manufacturing, and design.
Earlier first-generation electric models from Ford relied on heritage names including Mustang Mach-E, F-150 Lightning, and E-Transit. Ford previously registered trademark names such as Fuze, Hive, Mythic, and Evos, although none of those names have been confirmed for production models.
Standard features and technology
The starting price of $28,350 puts Fathom at a similar price level to the Ford Maverick. Standard equipment will include a large high-resolution touchscreen system featuring built-in Apple Maps with route planning tailored for electric vehicles, alongside standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration.
All versions of the pickup will support the BlueCruise hands-free driving assistance system from Ford, though entry-level models will require an additional payment to activate the feature. Standard features across all trims also include bidirectional charging capability, a digital key, and a front trunk storage compartment.
Production and battery supply
Ford has not released official figures for battery capacity, DC fast charging performance, or driving range. The announced starting price applies to the standard-range battery option, while a version with a larger battery for longer range is expected in the future.
Fathom will use domestic prismatic lithium-iron-phosphate battery cells made at the BlueOval Battery Park Michigan facility in Michigan. The $3 billion plant uses technology licensed from Chinese battery producer CATL. Ford will manufacture the pickup truck itself in Louisville, Kentucky, using a new assembly tree manufacturing process that differs from traditional vehicle assembly methods. Pre-orders for Fathom and full design details will open in early 2027 ahead of autumn deliveries.
