French football introduced Video Football Support during an opening third division match between Aubagne and Thionville. The launch marks the first official implementation of coaching challenges in the country's matches.
How the challenge system works
Under the Video Football Support system, team coaches have the right to request a challenge if they believe the referee made an incorrect decision. Each coach is allowed up to two challenges per game.
The system operates without a Video Assistant Referee room. When a coach requests a review, the main referee goes directly to a pitchside monitor to watch replays and decide whether to alter the call.
Broadcaster L1+ reported on August 7, 2026, that the first use of the system in Ligue 3 resulted in a red card for Aubagne.
