French Rafale jets intercept Russian FSB plane in Baltics

French Rafale fighter jets intercepted a Russian Federal Security Service airborne command post over the Baltic region during a four-month deployment, France's defense ministry said.

Between April 1 and July 31, 2026, two French Rafale detachments conducted 39 real-alert interception missions while patrolling the airspace of Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia under the NATO Baltic Air Policing mission.

The contingent logged 540 flight hours across 39 scrambles and 69 training missions. During the deployment, French Rafale C fighters shot down drones over Latvia and Estonia for the first time, marking a significant milestone for the mission.

Interception of Russian command aircraft

Images published during the deployment showed French jets intercepting a specialized Russian Tupolev Tu-214PU aircraft bearing tail number RA-64534, according to defense outlet Militarnyi. The aircraft is a modified version of the Tu-214 twin-engine medium-range passenger airliner.

The Tu-214PU belongs to Russia's Rossiya Special Flight Detachment, which provides air transport for top Russian political, military, and intelligence figures. The plane serves leadership of the FSB, Russia's main security agency, as a flying command post, air transport, and protected communications center.

Aviation expert Piotr Butowski identified a specialized LSZ-100 defense system on the intercepted aircraft from a photo taken by a French fighter over the Baltic Sea. The LSZ-100 is a laser-based directional optical-electronic countermeasure system designed to protect aircraft from heat-seeking missiles, particularly shoulder-fired man-portable air defense systems.

Border surveillance and operational readiness

Alongside Baltic patrols, the French unit was assigned to assist in monitoring Poland's eastern border against potential unauthorized drone or missile incursions. The aircrews operated on alternating readiness schedules, rotating between hot weeks requiring launch in under 15 minutes and cold weeks with a three-hour alert status.

French pilots also participated in joint training exercises with other Allied fighter units stationed across the region. Their drills included ground force support tactics and specialized training in intercepting unmanned aerial vehicles.

Ukrainian jet procurement and production

The Baltic operations come as Ukraine prepares to acquire its own fleet of French fighters. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed that Ukraine will purchase its first 16 Rafale fighters along with associated weaponry, while also becoming the first recipient of upgraded French-Italian SAMP/T NG air defense systems.

Training for Ukrainian pilots and mechanics is scheduled to begin in France later this year. Following the completion of training, the first four Rafale jets will be delivered to the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Aircraft manufacturer Dassault Aviation has ramped up production to meet growing international demand. In the first six months of 2026, Dassault delivered 12 Rafale fighters, including two to the French Air Force and 10 to foreign customers. The company reported a firm order backlog of 208 aircraft as of June 30, a figure analysts noted does not yet include Ukraine's planned order.
