Górnik Zabrze beat Korona Kielce 2-0 away in Kielce on Tuesday, with Peter Federico scoring both goals as the Ekstraklasa leaders won for the third match in a row.
Federico, who came through Real Madrid's youth academy before joining Górnik Zabrze, was the outstanding performer on the pitch, scoring both of the visitors' goals.
The Ekstraklasa is Poland's top professional football division, made up of 18 clubs that compete each season for the national championship, with the champions earning a place in European competition. Tuesday's match was one of several fixtures rearranged to make up for games postponed earlier in the season. Attention had already turned to Częstochowa earlier in the evening, where Raków Częstochowa lost an eventful contest 3-2 to Zagłębie Lubin, a club based in the western city of Lubin, before focus shifted to Kielce for the meeting between the hosts and the league's top side.
Górnik Zabrze extend winning run
Both teams arrived off wins from the previous Saturday and wanted to show they could be considered genuine contenders for the Polish championship this season. Korona Kielce came from behind to beat Śląsk Wrocław 2-1 with a late goal, while Górnik Zabrze, who finished as Polish runners-up last season, defeated Lech Poznań 2-1 thanks to a goal from Erik Prekop.
Górnik Zabrze are based in the Silesian city of Zabrze, while Korona Kielce play their home matches in Kielce, in south-central Poland. Górnik were managed by Michal Gasparik and Korona by Jacek Zieliński, with the match refereed by Damian Kos of Wejherowo. Korona were captained by Stępiński and Górnik by Janża, who was substituted in the 64th minute for Zmrzlý.
Federico put Górnik ahead in the 41st minute, receiving the ball at the edge of the penalty area, going past a defender and beating Korona goalkeeper Xavier Dziekoński with a left-footed shot. Korona had come close to scoring themselves shortly before, when a free kick from Wiktor Długosz narrowly missed.
Second-half chances
After the break, Górnik winger Maksym Chłań nearly added a second goal for the visitors. He collected the ball in space, beat his markers, but saw his shot well saved by the Korona goalkeeper.
The scoreline stayed at 1-0 until three minutes into second-half stoppage time, when Federico struck again, beating Dziekoński with another left-footed finish to make it 2-0. Korona's Ariel Mosór and Kamil Jakubczyk were both shown yellow cards during the match, as was Górnik's Erik Prekop.
The win was Górnik's third in a row and means the club will remain Ekstraklasa leaders through the international break regardless of how other results go.

Korona Kielce will host Raków Częstochowa at home on September 19 at 14:45, while Górnik Zabrze travel to face Motor Lublin the same day at 20:15.
