Górnik Zabrze climbed to the top of the table after securing a 2-1 home victory over Wisła Kraków on Sunday in Zabrze.
The hosts entered the final fixture of the fourth round of matches having won all of their opening league games, while Wisła Kraków's previous three fixtures had produced 13 goals. Górnik Zabrze knew that a win would place them top of the table at the conclusion of the round.
Górnik Zabrze opened the scoring in the 27th minute following a set piece. Kacper Urbański delivered a cross from a free kick into the penalty area, where the ball was flicked on before falling to Lukáš Sadílek, who struck it into the net past Wisła goalkeeper Marcel Łubik.
Second-half goals and key decisions
Wisła Kraków faced further difficulty early in the second half when French defender Maxence Maisonneuve committed a foul. Referee Damian Sylwestrzak considered whether the challenge warranted a red card before issuing a yellow card and awarding a free kick.
Maksym Chłań stepped up to take the free kick in the 53rd minute and scored with a direct strike past Łubik to extend Górnik Zabrze's lead to 2-0.
Wisła Kraków responded two minutes later in the 55th minute through Spanish forward Jordi Sánchez. Following an attacking build-up involving Jakub Krzyżanowski, the ball struck the crossbar, and Sánchez capitalized on the goalmouth scramble to direct the rebound into the net.
Red card and numerical advantage
The visiting team attempted to build on their momentum and equalize, particularly after Górnik Zabrze were reduced to ten men in the 57th minute when Sondre Liseth received a second yellow card and was sent off.
Despite playing with a numerical advantage for more than half an hour, Wisła Kraków were unable to score an equalizer, allowing Górnik Zabrze to claim the victory.
