Greek Deputy Health Minister Irini Agapidaki has outlined a broad bilateral initiative between Greece and Cyprus to expand public healthcare cooperation and disease prevention.
Speaking during an interactive social media question and answer session, Agapidaki detailed how the Greek Ministry of Health is actively assisting Cypriot officials in establishing their own national health prevention framework.
Responding to questions from social media users about joint actions between the two countries, Agapidaki noted that Greece and Cyprus already maintain very close collaboration across a range of vital medical sectors.
National Prevention and Chronic Illness
A central pillar of the partnership involves helping Cyprus develop its own adaptation of Greece's Prolambano preventive healthcare program. Agapidaki explained that the initiative focuses primarily on the early detection and prevention of major chronic diseases.
The Prolambano program in Greece serves as a national preventative screening initiative designed to catch chronic health conditions early through organized diagnostic testing. By sharing operational models and clinical guidelines, Greek officials aim to help Cyprus establish a similar framework to improve long-term population health outcomes.
Childhood Obesity and Medication Access
The bilateral cooperation also targets lifestyle health risks, with specific programs planned to combat childhood obesity. Agapidaki stated that both ministries are aligning strategies to address growing rates of early childhood weight issues.
In addition, the partnership emphasizes pharmaceutical innovation and expanding patient access to cutting-edge medications. Mediterranean healthcare systems frequently coordinate on drug evaluation, pricing transparency, and joint procurement strategies to ensure smaller member states maintain steady access to advanced therapies.
Public Health and Climate Challenges
Agapidaki highlighted broader public health initiatives as part of the ongoing coordination between Athens and Nicosia. She noted that both nations are working together to develop protective measures against health risks caused by the climate crisis.
Greece and Cyprus share similar geographical and environmental exposures in the eastern Mediterranean, where rising global temperatures increase risks related to heatwaves and vector-borne illnesses. The two health ministries plan to continue sharing resources and policy frameworks to strengthen public health resilience across both countries.
