Greece's Independent Authority for Public Revenue, known as AADE, has rolled out a new summer enforcement plan that combines tablets and drones with mystery shoppers and tax inspectors who travel between prefectures to catch businesses breaking tax rules.
Mobile teams are carrying out surprise checks across the country, from Crete to Poros, from Athens to Rhodes, and from Thessaloniki to the Cyclades, according to AADE.
How the checks work
The teams are using a rule that has been in force since 2023, which allows local tax offices, known as DOU, to carry out on-site tax inspections outside their own geographical jurisdiction. Sending inspectors into areas away from their home district is meant to preserve the element of surprise, AADE said.
The authority said the aim is to limit information leaks and prevent businesses from finding out about an inspection in advance and avoiding it.
