Nirmal Purja, the Nepalese mountaineer renowned for climbing all 14 of the world’s highest peaks in record time, has died in an avalanche on Broad Peak in Pakistan.
Elite Expedition, the company associated with Purja, confirmed on Saturday that he had been killed and said all other members of the expedition also did not survive.
On Sunday, Everest Today reported on platform X that a ground rescue team had reached the bodies of four climbers, including Purja, at roughly 5,700 metres on Broad Peak. According to the Alpine Club of Pakistan, three additional bodies were found at the same site, though their identities had not yet been confirmed. Rescuers were working to bring the remains to the Japanese Camp.
Ten climbers in total went missing. The remaining six were still being sought by rescue services. The expedition included climbers from Nepal, Pakistan, Oman, the United States, and China.
Purja rose to international fame in 2019 when he summited all 14 eight-thousanders in a record 189 days. His story was featured in the Netflix documentary “14 Peaks: Nothing Is Impossible.”
