Iga Swiatek advanced to the third round of the Cincinnati Open with a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Colombia's Emiliana Arango.
The defending champion overcame early resistance before taking control of the contest, winning the final eight games to secure her victory in Ohio.
Arango reached the second-round matchup after eliminating seven-time Grand Slam champion Venus Williams. The Colombian initially resisted Swiatek's attacks, but the recently crowned Toronto champion gradually established control as the match progressed.
Reporting for Polish sports website Sport.pl, analyst Dominik Stachowiak noted that Swiatek played with great care and was the superior player on court despite brave defense from Arango. A break of serve for 4-2 set up the opening set for Swiatek, who then saved two break points in the following game before closing out the set 6-3.
Swiatek dominated the second set from the start, breaking Arango's serve without losing a point in the opening game. After holding her own serve, Swiatek capitalized on a series of forehand, backhand, and service errors by Arango to extend her lead to 3-0 before completing the 6-0 sweep.
Title Defense and Ranking Impact
Swiatek is defending 1,000 WTA ranking points in Cincinnati after winning the tournament last year, when she defeated Italy's Jasmine Paolini 7-5, 6-4 in the final. Under the WTA Live ranking system, those 1,000 points were automatically deducted at the start of the tournament, leaving Swiatek to rebuild her total match by match.
The victory over Arango brings Swiatek's live ranking total to 4,484 points, placing her ninth in the live standings. Swiatek entered Cincinnati following a title win in Toronto, which had elevated her back into the official WTA top five ahead of Mirra Andreeva, who had 5,324 points, and Karolina Muchova, who had 5,118 points. At the time, Sport.pl reported that Swiatek trailed relatively close behind fourth-placed Coco Gauff's 5,919 points, while the top three remained out of reach.
In the live rankings following her win over Arango, Swiatek remains in ninth position. She trails eighth-placed Elina Svitolina, who holds 4,634 points. Svitolina is defending no points at Cincinnati after losing in the round of 64 to Barbora Krejcikova last year. Swiatek also faces pressure from tenth-placed Amanda Anisimova, who is defending no points and has added 30 points to reach 4,383 points, trailing Swiatek by just 101 points.
Current WTA Live Standings
At the top of the WTA live rankings, Aryna Sabalenka remains world number one with 8,465 points. Her lead over second-placed Elena Rybakina has shrunk to 354 points, with Rybakina holding 7,991 points. Jessica Pegula completes the top three with 6,680 points.
Coco Gauff holds fourth place in the live standings with 5,714 points, followed by Mirra Andreeva in fifth with 5,378 points. Karolina Muchova ranks sixth with 4,993 points, while Linda Noskova is seventh with 4,973 points. Svitolina, Swiatek, and Anisimova round out the top ten.
