Kuopio Demolishes Historic Puijo Normal Hill Ski Jump

The city of Kuopio has completed the demolition of the historic HS100 normal ski jump at the Puijo sports complex, ending years of safety concerns over the deteriorating Finnish venue.

Demolition crews tore down the crumbling medium-sized hill after city councillors determined last year that local municipal funds could not support rebuilding the facility. Public broadcaster Yle reported that land development is now underway at the site alongside essential upgrades to electrical and water infrastructure.

The ongoing utility work has temporarily shut down all other ski jumps at the Puijo venue except for the two smallest training hills. As a result, Finnish ski jumpers preparing for the upcoming season have been forced to relocate their regular training sessions to Lahti.

Infrastructure Challenges in Finnish Ski Jumping

The loss of the Kuopio structure comes as Finnish ski jumping struggles with a broader shortage of modern training venues for young athletes. While national team jumpers Antti Aalto and Niko Kytosaho recently returned Finland to the World Cup podium after a 14-year hiatus, the nation relies heavily on just three major complexes in Lahti, Ruka near Kuusamo, and Kuopio.

Safety inspectors closed the HS100 hill two years ago after warning that the structure was at risk of collapsing. The Puijo venue, situated on a prominent hill in central Finland, had fallen into disrepair after losing its spot on the international competition schedule.

Kuopio last hosted a FIS Ski Jumping World Cup event in February 2016, when Norway claimed victory in the team competition and Austrian jumper Michael Hayboeck won the individual event. The venue has not returned to the top-flight international calendar for over a decade.

Memories of World Cup Success at Puijo

Polish ski jumpers enjoyed significant success on the Puijo hills during international competitions. Legend Adam Małysz, known to fans as the Eagle of Wisła, claimed seven career World Cup podium finishes at Kuopio, including victories in 2001 and 2007 and a final podium appearance in 2010.

Fellow Polish champion Kamil Stoch also secured back-to-back victories at the venue in 2013 and 2014. Stoch later recalled that although numerous athletes complained about the technical demands of the Puijo hill, he always enjoyed jumping there and missed competing on the venue.

Concerns over Youth Development Gap

Despite the loss of the medium hill, city officials expect to preserve other elements of the Kuopio complex. Workers recently installed new plastic matting, known as igelit, on the landing slope of the larger HS127 hill to allow year-round jumping, while the smallest hills will also remain functional.

However, local sports figures caution that the missing middle step will hinder athlete progression. Quoted by TVP Sport, Olympic silver medalist Janne Happonen of the Kuopio ski club argued that forcing young athletes to jump directly from a K65 hill to a large K120 facility creates too wide a gap, making a normal hill essential for youth development.

Coaches, active jumpers, and former competitors have launched appeals for financial backing to construct a replacement hill. Kuopio Mayor Neeta Roeppaenen previously stated that maintaining Puijo as a national ski jumping center would require joint funding beyond local municipal resources, while coach Jarkko Saapunki remarked that it remains worthwhile to live with faith.
