Chicago Fire lost 1-2 at home to New England Revolution, leaving Robert Lewandowski and his teammates without a win in six straight Major League Soccer matches and dropping the club to fifth place in the Eastern Conference.
Fire had arrived at the match just one point behind New England Revolution, who sat third in the conference table separated from Chicago only by Charlotte FC. A win would have lifted Gregg Berhalter's side back into the top three with a game in hand, but it did not come.
Revolution Strike Twice Before Halftime
The first half started quietly. Lewandowski had his first and only chance of the opening 45 minutes in the 11th minute, when he tried to turn in a follow-up after Philipp Zinckernagel's blocked shot, only to see his own effort blocked as well. For the rest of the half he was largely reduced to voicing his frustration at teammates' decisions on the ball.
New England Revolution broke the deadlock in the 39th minute. A defensive clearance from Jackson Yueill fell to Dor Turgeman, who held off the challenge of Samuel Rogers and beat goalkeeper Chris Brady in a one-on-one to make it 1-0. Moments earlier, Lewandowski had headed a cross straight at goalkeeper Matt Turner, and Puso Dithejane failed to turn in the rebound. New England almost doubled their lead before the break, but Fire's goalkeeper made a save to keep it at 1-0 at halftime.
Substitute Haile-Selassie Pulls One Back
New England Revolution struck again soon after the restart. In the 47th minute, Turgeman drove down the left and squared the ball into the box for Peyton Miller, who finished from close range to make it 2-0 for the team coached by Marko Mitrović.
Berhalter responded in the 55th minute by sending on Jonathan Bamba, Robin Lod and Maren Haile-Selassie, hoping the trio would sharpen Chicago's attack and create chances for Lewandowski. Haile-Selassie had a shot blocked almost immediately after coming on, set up by Zinckernagel.
The breakthrough arrived in the 62nd minute, when Zinckernagel again picked out Haile-Selassie, who beat Turner with a confident finish by the post to make it 2-1. Three minutes later Haile-Selassie thought he had a second after pouncing on a scramble in the box, but the goal was ruled out for offside against Lewandowski. Lewandowski argued with the officials, though the offside call was clear.
Lewandowski Wasteful in Late Chances
Chicago Fire pressed for an equaliser as the game went on, but could not find a way past Turner. In the 79th minute, Lewandowski squared a good ball from the left to Lod, but the Finnish midfielder's first-time volley flew straight into the goalkeeper's hands.
With two minutes of normal time left, Lewandowski headed a chance of his own but again could not beat Turner. In the final minute of stoppage time, he struck a shot wide of the post after a cross from Andrew Gutman.
Winless Run Extends to Six Games
No further goals followed, and Chicago Fire's match without a win stretched to six. The match finished Chicago Fire 1-2 New England Revolution, with goals from Turgeman in the 39th minute, Miller in the 47th and Haile-Selassie in the 62nd. Robert Chase Allen was booked for Fire, while Kobe Polster and Miller picked up yellow cards for New England Revolution. Rubiel Vazquez was the referee.
Lewandowski, the captain of the Poland national team and one of the most prolific strikers of his generation, had scored three goals and provided two assists across his previous three appearances for Chicago Fire, though each of those matches ended in a draw. The club's last league win came on 20 August 2026, and Saturday's defeat to New England Revolution, an MLS club based in Foxborough, Massachusetts, marked the sixth game Berhalter's team has played without a victory since then.
