President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and Senator Flavio Bolsonaro have moved significantly closer to attending TV Globo's upcoming presidential debate on October 1. The decision by Brazil's largest television network to restrict the broadcast to only four candidates has sharply increased the likelihood that both frontrunners will face each other, according to reporting by CNN Brasil.
TV Globo invited Lula, Bolsonaro, Augusto Cury of the Avante party, and Ronaldo Caiado of the Social Democratic Party. Under Brazilian broadcast regulations, television networks are only required to invite candidates whose parties or coalitions elected at least five members of Congress in 2022. The broadcaster noted that other candidates could still receive invitations if any of the four selected politicians fail to attend.
The televised event is scheduled just days before voters decide the next occupant of the Palacio do Planalto, the presidential office in Brasilia. TV Globo's debates traditionally draw millions of viewers and serve as the most influential broadcast of the campaign before the first round of voting.
Strategy in the Lula Campaign
Lula's campaign leadership had previously resisted participating in first-round debates. Advisers to the leftist president evaluated that he would be forced to stand alone against five conservative challengers.
According to a source in the campaign, the chance of Lula participating would have been close to zero if Renan Santos of the Missao party and Romeu Zema of the Novo party had also been invited. However, with recent opinion polls showing a tighter race, the Workers' Party reassessed its strategy, expanded the president's public appearances, and intensified direct clashes with Bolsonaro.
With the debate now under consideration, Lula's reelection campaign chose not to schedule any commitments for September 30 and October 1, as reported by CNN Brasil. The campaign reserved the eve of the broadcast for candidate preparation.
Conditions for the Bolsonaro Campaign
The increased likelihood of Lula's attendance has brought Bolsonaro closer to participating. Allies of the Liberal Party lawmaker said he is keeping his initial strategy and will only take part in a first-round debate if the president also shows up.
Bolsonaro's campaign advisers calculated that Caiado and Cury do not represent direct rivals in the debate, despite ongoing talk of strategic voting. The team also warned that without Lula on stage, the senator would become the primary target of the other candidates, who theoretically share the same voter base and aim for his votes.
Excluded Candidates Contest the Decision
The decision to cap the lineup drew immediate pushback from candidates left off the invitation list. Missao candidate Renan Santos called the network's choice absurd and announced that he would hold a protest demonstration in response.
In a video, Santos said the broadcaster invited seven candidates in the previous presidential election before reducing the field to four this year. He said his movement had gathered large crowds without money, despite social media restrictions, and insisted that his supporters would not stop.
Members of the campaign for Romeu Zema of the Novo party also expressed strong dissatisfaction. Speaking confidentially, campaign officials described their reaction as one of frustration and said they are still seeking ways to appeal TV Globo's decision.
