Morocco exported 46,430 tonnes of tomatoes to Spain between Jan. 1 and May 31, 2026, consolidating its position as Spain's main tomato supplier. Data collected by Hortoinfo from statistics by Estacom, the agency under Spain's tax authority ICEX, shows this volume represents a 69.33% increase compared to the same period in 2017, when Spanish imports from Morocco did not exceed 27,420 tonnes.
In terms of value, Spanish tomato imports from Morocco have almost tripled in ten years. They rose from 29.26 million euros to 85.53 million euros. The average price paid was 1.84 euros per kilogram during the first five months of the year, compared to 1.07 euros per kilogram in the same period of 2017.
Overall, Spain imported 66,050 tonnes of tomatoes between January and May 2026, which marks a 71.09% increase compared to the same period in 2017. These total imports cost 124.52 million euros, with an average price of 1.89 euros per kilogram. Morocco alone supplied more than 70% of all Spanish tomato imports during this period, strengthening its position as the main supplier to the nation.
European tomato suppliers to Spain
Portugal ranked as the second largest supplier, delivering 12,690 tonnes of tomatoes to Spain, which represents 19.22% of total Spanish tomato imports. Portuguese exports have more than tripled in ten years, rising from 3,740 tonnes recorded between January and May 2017. These shipments generated 20.16 million euros at an average price of 1.59 euros per kilogram.
The Netherlands finished third among suppliers with 2,870 tonnes, accounting for 4.34% of the volume imported by Spain. Dutch exports reached a total value of 9.27 million euros. Their average price stood at 3.23 euros per kilogram, which was the highest average price among all main suppliers.
France placed fourth, supplying 1,490 tonnes of tomatoes for a 2.25% import share. French tomato sales totalled 3.67 million euros, averaging 2.47 euros per kilogram. Belgium rounded out the top five suppliers with 1,030 tonnes, representing 1.56% of Spanish imports, valued at 1.58 million euros at an average price of 1.53 euros per kilogram, according to reporting cited by Le360.
