Moscow and the surrounding region face weekend thunderstorms and a temperature drop following hot weather, according to weather forecasters.

Moscow will experience thunderstorms and cooler weather over the weekend, according to Tatiana Pozdnyakova, chief specialist at the capital weather bureau. Pozdnyakova told news agency RIA Novosti that residents will get a full break from the exhausting heat recorded during the second half of the working week.

On Saturday, August 8, daytime temperatures will reach 22 to 24 degrees Celsius in Moscow and 21 to 26 degrees in the surrounding Moscow region. Light short-term rain will fall in some places.

Overnight, a thunderstorm will strike the capital region with wind gusts of 12 to 15 meters per second bringing cold air masses into Moscow. Temperatures on the night into Sunday, August 9, will drop to 13 to 15 degrees in the capital and 11 to 16 degrees in the region.

Daytime temperatures on Sunday will reach 22 to 24 degrees in Moscow and 20 to 25 degrees across the region. Pozdnyakova said these temperatures match the climatic norm, adding that the end of the week will see no precipitation.

Further Cooling Next Week

Temperatures in Moscow will fall by another five to seven degrees next week, according to Anatoly Tsygankov, head of the crisis management department at Roshydromet.

Tsygankov expects the coldest weather on Thursday and Friday, August 13 and 14, when temperatures will not rise above 20 degrees Celsius. He noted that past Friday may remain the hottest day of August.
