Olympiacos secured a 1-0 victory away against Asteras Tripolis to maintain a perfect record of two wins from their opening two league matches.
Forward Jota Silva scored the only goal of the game in the 31st minute, converting a close-range header following a cross from Manolis Saliakas to put the visiting side ahead in Tripoli.
Asteras Tripolis started the contest with energy on home soil, threatening as early as the seventh minute. Forward Orozco unleashed a dangerous shot that forced Olympiacos goalkeeper Ortega into a difficult save before the visitors began settling into their rhythm.
Olympiacos, managed by Spanish head coach Jose Luis Mendilibar, pressed for a second goal before halftime. Roca came close in the 44th minute with a placed shot, but Asteras goalkeeper Papadopoulos managed to parry the ball away under pressure.
Woodwork denies second goal
The Piraeus club almost doubled their lead immediately after the restart in the 46th minute. Forward El Kaabi directed a header towards goal, only to see the ball strike the post.
Asteras responded in the 53rd minute with a good effort from Orozco that flew wide. Olympiacos missed another opportunity in the 58th minute when El Kaabi broke clear in a one-on-one situation, but Papadopoulos saved his attempt.
Olympiacos are based in the port city of Piraeus near Athens and are one of the most prominent clubs in Greek football. Asteras Tripolis represent the regional capital of Arcadia in the Peloponnese, competing alongside Olympiacos in Super League Greece, the top division of professional football in the country.
Late drama in stoppage time
Following El Kaabi's chance, the match proceeded without major clear-cut opportunities until the 96th minute. Midfielder Freuler played Gonzalez into a scoring position, but the midfielder hit the crossbar on his debut for the club.
Asteras Tripolis made five substitutions during the match. Perez replaced the injured Bartolo at halftime, Kibioka came on for Orozco in the 60th minute, Kaltsas and Macheda replaced Ketu and Ricardinho in the 76th minute, and Papakanellos took over from Kotsiras in the 82nd minute.
Olympiacos also reshuffled their lineup, replacing the injured Saliakas with Smailovic in the 64th minute. Gelson and Gonzalez replaced Jota and Roca in the 69th minute, while Sa and Freuler came on for El Kaabi and Scipioni in the 75th minute.
